Morgan McKean / Breathe Media Communications
When she’s not busy running around after her 2 ½ year old son, south Orange County resident, Morgan McKean eats, sleeps and breathes media communications, as she so appropriately named her media company, Breathe Media Communications.
After spending over eleven years in the entertainment industry, most of which was in some form of media relations, she took some ‘mommy’ time off when her son was born and then hit the pavement running when she formed the marketing, branding and media relations firm she now calls ‘home-away-from-home’.
She makes time in her packed schedule to sit down with OC Mom's Blog and give us a small glimpse into the mostly fabulous life of a publicist and mom.
What is the hardest thing about having a child and running your business?
I would have to say that having enough time in the day, and the energy to give 110% to each, is my biggest challenge. I consider my business to be like having another child that needs my attention in order to be successful, however, after a long day at the office, switching hats and having enough energy to devote to my son is of utmost importance to me.
It sounds like you have a little of that ‘working mom’ guilt. How do you deal with that?
I don’t really feel guilty about working because getting up and going to work makes me a better mother. By having a career I really enjoy, even when it’s hectic, I feel more secure with myself as a person, which in turn makes it easier to focus on my son and his needs when we’re together.
What kind of clients do you serve at your agency?
We are a branding, marketing and public relations firm specializing in style-driven businesses, socially conscious entertainment and high-concept ventures. Most of my clients are in fashion, beauty and female consumer goods and services.
What’s a typical day like for you?
One big blur... (laughing). I wake up around 6:30, grab my Blackberry and head straight to the computer to check my email and publications and other media outlets relevant to my clients. I take care of my son and the house then head to the office around 9:30 am. When I’m not in a client strategizing meeting, lunching with an editor or checking out a venue for an event, I spend most of my day with a phone glued to my ear, my eyes on a computer screen and my free hand dialing the fax machine.
Is there a secret to being a good mother and having a successful career?
I would have to say that scheduling a ‘special time’ with your children daily makes them feel important and wanted, which is an imperative part of parenting. Also, having other people to rely on, since my son entered into pre-school it’s been much easier to function.
Does being a mother help you with your job?
Most defiantly, before my son was born I was not a patient person, by any stretch of the imagination. Now, I think I’m much more in tune with the flow of things, if something doesn’t turn out the way I want it to, I just find another path to get my desired result. Also, my patience with clients who don’t understand media relations has grown seven-fold. I have finally grasped the concept that each person learns differently and it’s my job to find the ‘right way’ to explain what I know.
Do you think you will have another child?
Given my current schedule, I think the answer to that one is still up in the air.
Outside of work and motherhood, what types of activities do you do for yourself?
I’m a huge fan of the "Mani Pedi", it gives me time to close my eyes and have someone pamper me for a little while. I enjoy perusing bookstores, doing yoga, going dancing and trying out new recipes, I’m a huge fan of Indian food. I also like to travel, whether it’s personal or business, it doesn’t matter, just having quiet time in an airport, on an airplane or in a hotel room is a little slice of heaven.
